Karauli, Rajasthan

The small rural town of Karauli shares its borders with Madhya Pradesh, Dausa, Dhaulapur and Sawai Madhopur. With considerably plentiful environmental wealth and breathtaking picturesque splendor, Karauli has turned into a popular hot destination with tourists calling on Rajasthan. Countless great antiquated shrines, beautiful decorated havelis and imprinted chatrris dot the whole city. The flawless merger of the classical panache of Mughal buildings with cheerful insignia and elaborate carved stone work echo the true old Rajasthani elegance of construction.

The train safari between Jodhpur and Udaipur is a real highlight for anyone visiting the Pali district, especially the section of the trip as it travels through the Kambli Ghat Pass. Take a horse ride through the landscape or do a horse trek over several days if you’re feeling adventurous. Alternatively, join a jeep safari through the centre of Jojawar and take some time to admire the colourful saris and wares at the bustling market.

Ramathra Fort /

Nestled on a quiet hilltop between Agra and Ranthambore National Park, Ramathra Fort is a private property that has been lovingly converted into a luxury boutique hotel and camping experience over the years. The owner and his family are direct descendants of the original founder, Thakur Bhoj Pal. Today, Ramathra Fort is a unique rural boutique experience, and the draw card is undoubtedly the splendid surroundings, the beautiful lake, and the village life surrounding the fort.

From the top of the hills, the views across the plains are striking, and the best place to relax and take it all in is from a hot tub located on top of one of the old fort turrets. On the grounds, you’ll find luxury tents, rooms, and suites. The suites, in particular, are highly recommended, each with its own private terrace and outdoor bathtub. Alternatively, the luxury tents are spacious and surrounded by meticulously maintained green gardens, each with its own bathhouse and private porch.

The fort itself is the attraction in the area, and there isn’t much in the way of sightseeing nearby, although jeep safaris can be arranged and the surrounding countryside is perfect for exploring. The food is delicious and locally sourced. You can also interact with locals and observe rural activities in a way that isn’t contrived or touristy.

It is a bit of an adventure to reach, as the surrounding roads are fairly rough making the journey to and from quite difficult. If you can survive that the very inaccessibility of Ramathra Fort makes it a very special and secluded place for couples and families to stay, far off the beaten track.

If you love the idea of peace, quiet, and isolation, we would definitely recommend spending a few nights here.
