It is popularly believed that Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling penned part of his famous novel ‘Kim’ in Bundi. In fact, so impressed was he by the place, that this is what he wrote about the Bundi palace: Jaipur Palace may be called the Versailles of India … Jodhpur’s House of strife, gray towers on red rock, is the work of giants, but the Palace of Bundi, even in broad daylight, is such a palace as men build for themselves in uneasy dreams – the work of goblins rather than of men.’

Bundi is a magnificent town located around 36 kilometres from Kota. Dotted with palaces and forts, the place has a fairy tale quality about it. Bundi’s charm lies in its location –surrounded by orchards of orange, guava, pomegranate and mango trees, flanked by the Aravalli range and rivers and lined by fields of cotton, barley and wheat. Situated far from the crowds, it is the simple rural folk that lend Bundi its allure.

Bundi Vilas, Bundi /

This charismatic converted private mansion (haveli) has made a large impression since opening in 2008. The haveli was built into the ramparts of the Bundi Garh Palace 300 years ago, and you can only enter by foot from the heart of the walled city, through the maze of winding alleyways and up through the original 40 foot stone archway. Romantic doesn't begin to cover it. The surroundings are also pretty spectacular: the rolling Aravali hills, the town of Bundi with its vivid blue houses, and the lake down below. The views are best enjoyed from the romantic roof terrace, where meals are served.

Seven rooms are modern and tastefully decorated, although some of them are smaller and dark. All of them are air conditioned with comfortable beds and decent bathrooms. The service is very laid back and friendly, and the food is delicious. Bundi itself is much less visited than places such as Jaipur and Jodhpur and in the eyes of many experienced India travellers, the entire better for it. Very highly recommended as a stopover.
